Carly Bargiel
1/K PE Teacher
Punahou School
Aloha, my name is Carly Bargiel. I have been teaching elementary PE for 13 years. I spent my first decade of teaching physical education at international schools in Asia. Then I got my dream job at Punahou School on Oahu where I am fortunate enough to only be teaching kindergarten and grade 1 physical education. I have always had a passion for self-growth and movement. As a PE teacher, I am provided with the most amazing platform to bring these two worlds together. I get to instill a love of movement and a love for yourself all in one space. I have devoted a big chunk of my professional development into understanding students' emotional and social needs. This shapes and guides how I navigate my teaching. I have learned that students need to feel seen, heard, and safe in an environment for learning to occur. Through trial and error over the past 13 years of teaching, I have found a way to foster that environment, and I am hoping to share this with all so we can help children thrive to their fullest potential.
SEL in the PE classroom
This session will focus on SEL in the PE classroom, however, these tools can be applied in any classroom setting. First, we will take time to understand RULER (recognize, understand, label, express, regulate) and why it is important in social and emotional regulation. Then we will be unpacking the mood meter tool. I will teach you how to use it in PE, how to create a dialogue around it, and how students can use it. Next, we will unpack a dialogue with students that will help empower them to solve problems quickly. I will also be sharing my two go-to pieces of dialogue that have been a game changer in classroom management. Finally, I will touch on some relaxation techniques that will help students transition from a high-energy state to a calm state in 10 breaths. You will step away with lots of tools and the ability to create an environment that will help students thrive.
